August 14, 2009 Story and Photographs by Greg Maupin The Shelbyville High School football team picked up some much needed confidence heading into the season opener with an impressive 20-7 win over Page High School. The win came Friday night in the 1st annual Bedford County Jamboree with the freshman and varsity playing two quarters each against the Patriots. With 6:39 remaining in the third quarter, quarterback Tre Stewart connected with Jovan Jackson for a 56 yard reception and touchdown. Angel Jarquin added the extra point and the Eagles went up 7-0. Moments later with 6:06 on the clock, the Shelbyville defense intercepted the ball and ran it back for the score. Senior Michaux Maxwell returned the ball 37 yards on the interception return, and the Eagles took a 14-0 lead after Jarquin added the extra point. Maxwell intercepted the ball for a second time on Page's new possession giving the ball back to the Shelbyville offense. The Eagles scored once more with 1:53 remaining in the third quarter. Quarterback Tre Stewart found Michaux Maxwell for the 34 yard reception and touchdown. The point after failed giving Shelbyville a 20-0 advantage. The scoring drive consisted of 64 yards on 7 plays and would be the last time the Eagles would score. Page scored in the fourth quarter returning a Shelbyville kickoff 85 yards and scoring four plays later. The extra point was good and pulled the Patriots to within two scores at 20-7. The Shelbyville defense was responsible for four interceptions including one each from Luke Faulk and Colin Biegas. Michaux Maxwell accounted for the other two. Shelbyville was without the services of three key players including leading tackler Hunter Brothers and fellow senior Jeffrey Holman. Phillip Jones was dressed but did not play. Brothers is expected to return Friday night for the season opener. In the air, Shelbyville was 5 of 9 for 112 yards with one interception and two touchdowns. Tre Stewart was 4 of 6 for 105 yards, one interception, and two touchdowns. Luke Faulk was 1 of 3 for 7 yards. Jovan Jackson led all receivers with 52 yards on two receptions. Micaux Maxwell had 34 yards on one reception while teammate Isiah Washington had 19 yards on one reception. Junior Bobby Wilson had 7 yards on one reception. On the ground, Shelbyville ran the ball 9 times for 62 yards. Michaux Maxwell ran the ball 37 yards on 1 carry to lead the Eagles. Tre Stewart picked up 12 yards on 3 carries while teammate Will Trice carried the ball on 3 carries for 4 yards. Julius Smythe rushed the ball 2 yards on 1 carry while freshman Marquis Morton picked up 1 yard on 1 carry. Shelbyville opens the season Friday night at home against Coffee County. Kickoff is 7:00pm CST and will be broadcast live on Shelbyville Sports.com
